What lead generation is
A lead is a person or company that has shown interest and left a way to follow up: a form, a phone call, a booking, a download or a message. Lead generation covers everything that makes that happen, from being found to the moment your team picks up the conversation.
For most of our clients it rests on four parts:
- Visibility where your future customers look: search, Google Ads, LinkedIn or industry platforms.
- A convincing offer on your website: who you help, how, and why you rather than the alternatives.
- A low threshold to make contact: short forms, clear next steps, a phone number that is answered.
- Follow-up that is fast, personal and lawful.
Lead generation is one part of a wider digital marketing approach. It works best when the channels and the website are planned together.
Why quality matters more than volume
A hundred enquiries that do not fit cost your team time and produce little. Ten enquiries from the right companies, with the right budget and the right question, can make a year. That is why we aim for qualified leads, not maximum numbers.
In practice that means sometimes making it slightly harder to get in touch. A form that asks about budget, timing or company size produces fewer enquiries, but better ones. A clear page on how you work, and what you do not do, filters out people who were never going to be a fit.
We agree with you what a qualified lead looks like before we spend a dollar. That definition steers every later decision, from keywords to form fields.
Why we do not buy lead lists
Some providers sell contact lists or deliver leads at a fixed price per enquiry. It looks efficient. In practice, bought lists are often outdated, the people on them never asked to hear from you, and emailing them raises serious questions under Canadian law.
Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation, CASL, applies to commercial electronic messages such as marketing emails and texts. In general terms, you need consent to send them, you must identify yourself, and every message needs a working way to unsubscribe. Shared leads from comparison sites are another trap: they are often sent to several providers at once, so you compete on price before the conversation starts.
We build lead generation on channels you control. That takes more time to set up, but every enquiry belongs to you, and the value grows instead of you paying per contact forever. For your specific obligations under CASL and privacy law, we recommend checking with counsel.
Lead generation channels compared
Each channel brings a different kind of lead. This overview shows how we usually weigh them.
| Channel | Lead quality | Speed | Cost structure | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | High: people actively searching | Months to build | Upfront investment, lasting effect | Companies customers already search for |
| Google Ads | High with good targeting | Days to weeks | Ongoing, per click | Immediate demand and testing offers |
| Google lead form assets | Mixed: easy to submit | Fast | Per click, inside Google Ads | Simple offers with clear qualification questions |
| Good for B2B decision-makers | Weeks | Relatively expensive per click | B2B with a clear target group | |
| Bought lists and shared leads | Low | Fast | Per contact, ongoing | We do not recommend it |
Lead generation through your website
Whichever channel brings visitors, the website decides whether they become leads. That is where much of the gain lies, and it is often the cheapest place to improve.
- A clear proposition above the fold: who you help and with what.
- Proof that you can deliver: credentials, process, examples of work and real reviews where you have them.
- One logical next step per page, not five competing buttons.
- Short, purposeful forms that ask only what you need to qualify.
- Tracking on every form and call, so you know which page and channel produced each lead.
Improving how many visitors turn into enquiries is the field of conversion rate optimization. For new sites or major rebuilds, it starts with the landing page design.
B2B lead generation
B2B buying is rarely impulsive. Several people are involved, the decision takes weeks or months, and trust weighs heavily. B2B lead generation therefore asks for a different approach than consumer marketing:
- Content that helps buyers decide: comparisons, explanations, honest pricing factors.
- Targeting by role and company, for example on LinkedIn or through specific search terms.
- Nurturing people who are not ready yet, for example with a newsletter they opted into, sent in line with CASL consent rules.
- Close alignment with sales, so leads are followed up quickly and feedback flows back into marketing.
Personal visibility of the founder or senior specialists often plays a large role in B2B. A credible person is easier to contact than a logo.
Local leads for service businesses
For clinics, trades, law firms and other local service businesses, many leads start with a local search: a phone call from Google Maps, a booking after reading reviews. A complete and active Google Business Profile, consistent company details and a website that loads quickly on a phone matter as much as any campaign. Where Google offers ad formats for local services in your category and region, we assess whether they fit alongside regular search campaigns. More on local SEO.
How we set up lead generation
- Strategy session (50 minutes, paid). A conversation with the founder about your ambition, your market and whether we are the right fit.
- Define the ideal customer. Who do you want on the phone, and who not? What do they search for, and where?
- Measure the current situation. Which channels produce enquiries now, and which of those become customers?
- Fix the website. Proposition, trust, forms and tracking.
- Activate channels. Often Google Ads for quicker enquiries and SEO for lasting growth.
- Improve based on outcomes. We steer on customers and revenue, not only on the number of forms.
We do not promise a fixed number of leads. We do promise an approach in which you can see what each dollar produces.
