What good ecommerce website design includes
An online store has more jobs than a regular website. It has to present products clearly, answer the questions that stop people buying, handle payments, tax and shipping correctly, and still be found in search. Web design for ecommerce is therefore as much about product data and checkout logic as it is about visuals.
- Category and product structure based on how customers search and browse, not only on how your warehouse is organized.
- Product pages that answer fit, material, compatibility, delivery and returns questions before they become support emails.
- A short, trustworthy checkout with the payment methods Canadians expect.
- Store settings for currency, taxes, shipping zones and languages.
- Analytics and conversion tracking so you can see which products, pages and campaigns make money.
The store sits on the same foundation as all our web design work: research first, then structure, then design.
Shopify, Shopify Plus or WooCommerce?
Most Canadian brands we speak to choose between Shopify and WooCommerce. Both can run an excellent store; they suit different businesses. We recommend a platform only after looking at your catalogue, team and growth plans.
| Shopify | Shopify Plus | WooCommerce (WordPress) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Most product brands that want a reliable, hosted store | High-volume brands needing more automation and checkout control | Content-heavy brands and stores needing custom logic |
| Hosting and security | Handled by Shopify | Handled by Shopify | Your responsibility (or your host's) |
| Flexibility | High within Shopify's framework; apps for extras | Higher, with more advanced features | Very high; almost anything can be built |
| Content and blogging | Adequate | Adequate | Strong, thanks to WordPress |
| Ongoing costs | Monthly plan plus app subscriptions | Higher monthly fee | Hosting, plugin licences and maintenance time |
| Main risk | App sprawl slowing the store down | Paying for features you do not use | Plugin conflicts and update maintenance |
Canadian store setup: CAD, sales tax, shipping and French
A store built for the United States and "switched on" for Canada usually shows it. These are the Canada-specific points we plan into every ecommerce project.
CAD pricing and currency
Canadian shoppers want to see prices in Canadian dollars, without surprises at checkout. We set CAD as the store currency or configure multi-currency properly if you also sell to the US, and we make sure product feeds for Google Shopping use the right currency.
GST, HST, PST and QST
Sales tax in Canada depends on where the customer is. Some provinces use the harmonized sales tax (HST), others charge GST plus a provincial sales tax, and Quebec has its own QST. Your platform can apply rates by province, but the correct setup depends on your registrations and what you sell. The Canada Revenue Agency's GST/HST guidance for businesses is the starting point. We configure the store based on the tax decisions you confirm with your accountant; we do not give tax advice.
Shipping across provinces
Shipping from Ontario to British Columbia, the North or rural Newfoundland is not one flat rate. We set up shipping zones and rules that reflect real carrier costs, clear delivery estimates and a free-shipping threshold only where your margins allow it. Shipping information appears on product pages, not only at checkout, because surprise costs are a common reason people abandon a cart.
Bilingual stores for Quebec
If you sell to customers in Quebec, French matters, both for customers and for the province's language rules. A bilingual store needs French product content, French checkout and emails, and separate French URLs that can rank in French search. We plan both languages from the start instead of adding a translation plugin at the end. Confirm your specific obligations with a qualified adviser.
Privacy and consent
Stores collect personal information at every order. Canada's federal privacy law, PIPEDA, sets the baseline for most private-sector businesses. We build clear privacy notices, consent for marketing emails and tracking that respects the choices visitors make.
Ecommerce SEO and Shopify SEO, built into the store
Ecommerce SEO is mostly structure. If categories, filters and product variants are set up badly, a store can create thousands of thin or duplicate pages that compete with each other. Fixing that after launch is slow.
- Category pages that target real searches, with useful introductory content and internal links.
- Controlled filters and variants, so search engines index the pages that matter and not every combination.
- Unique product descriptions instead of manufacturer copy used by every other retailer.
- Product structured data for price, availability and reviews where they are genuine, following Google's product structured data documentation.
- Speed: optimized images, a lean theme and a small number of apps.
Shopify SEO has its own quirks, such as fixed URL prefixes and duplicate product paths through collections. We work with those constraints rather than against them. For ongoing growth after launch, our SEO services continue the work, and Google Ads and Shopping campaigns can bring in sales while organic rankings build.
Choosing an ecommerce agency or Shopify developer
Whether you are looking for an ecommerce agency, a Shopify agency, a Shopify developer or a Shopify expert, it comes down to the same question: who can build a store that sells, not just one that works? Kaptein Beacon is an independent studio; we are not an official Shopify Partner agency and do not claim to be. What we offer is strategy, design, SEO and development led by one accountable founder.
Whoever you hire, check these points:
- Do they ask about margins, shipping costs and returns before talking about design?
- Can they explain how they will handle Canadian sales tax and French content?
- Do they plan category structure for search, or only build a theme?
- How many apps will the store depend on, and what do they cost each month?
- Will you own the store, theme code, content and data?
For larger brands considering Shopify Plus, ask whether you genuinely need its features. A well-built standard Shopify store often goes further than expected.
Our ecommerce process
- Strategy session (50 minutes, paid). A professional introductory conversation with the founder about your ambition, your market and whether we are the right fit.
- Proposal with fixed scope, fixed price and timeline.
- Research and structure: categories, filters, product templates and keyword map.
- Design of the homepage, category, product, cart and key content pages for mobile and desktop.
- Build and setup: theme, products, taxes, shipping, payments, languages, tracking.
- Testing: test orders per province, payment methods, emails, speed and accessibility.
- Launch and handover, with training for your team.
Store projects usually take longer than brochure sites, mostly because of product data and content. Your proposal gives a realistic timeline.
Ecommerce checklist before you launch
- Test orders placed with addresses in several provinces, with taxes checked against your accountant's instructions.
- Shipping rates and delivery estimates visible on product pages.
- Return and refund policy written clearly and linked from every product page.
- French content and emails reviewed by a native French writer, if you sell to Quebec.
- Conversion tracking and ecommerce analytics firing correctly on purchase.
- Redirects in place from any old store URLs.
- Product structured data valid and matching what is on the page.
- Mobile checkout tested on a real phone, start to finish.
