What business coaching with Kaptein Beacon is
Running a company is lonely in a specific way: the decisions that matter most are the ones you cannot easily discuss with staff, and friends or family rarely have the context. A business coach gives you a structured place to think those decisions through with someone who asks hard questions and has no stake in office politics.
Our coaching is practical rather than motivational. It focuses on the commercial side of the business:
- Positioning and pricing: who you serve, why they choose you and what you charge.
- Marketing strategy: which channels to invest in, in what order, and what to stop doing.
- Online visibility: how your website, search presence and brand support growth.
- Priorities and focus: what deserves your time this quarter, and what can wait.
- Decisions you keep postponing: hiring, saying no to the wrong clients, raising prices, launching something new.
We build and run our own brands too, so the advice comes from someone who makes the same kind of decisions, not from theory alone.
Who it is for
Our coaching suits founders, owners and directors of established small and mid-sized companies who:
- have a working business and want to grow it deliberately rather than by accident;
- feel that marketing spend is not clearly connected to results;
- want to move upmarket, raise prices or attract better clients;
- need an outside sparring partner for strategic decisions;
- prefer direct feedback over encouragement.
It is less suitable if you are looking for therapy, life coaching, or for someone to carry out the work for you. If execution is what you need, our project services such as web design, SEO and branding may be a better starting point.
Business coach, consultant or fractional CMO?
These roles are often confused. The right one depends on whether you need to think better, get a specific answer, or have someone own marketing for you.
| Business coach | Business consultant | Fractional CMO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main role | Helps you think, decide and follow through | Analyzes a problem and recommends a solution | Leads marketing part-time as a member of your team |
| Who does the work | You do; the coach challenges and supports | Consultant delivers analysis and advice | The CMO plans, manages people and budgets |
| Typical format | Regular sessions over a period | A defined project with a report or plan | A set number of days per month, ongoing |
| Best when | You own the decisions and want a sharper sparring partner | You need a specific question answered | Marketing needs senior leadership you cannot yet hire full time |
| Kaptein Beacon offers | Yes | Yes, through audits | No; we can help you define the role and brief |
Executive coaching versus small business coaching
Executive coaching usually focuses on leadership, communication and personal effectiveness, often for managers inside larger organizations. A leadership coach or CEO coach in that tradition typically works on how you lead people.
Our focus is different. We coach founders and directors on the business itself: strategy, market position, marketing and growth. That makes us closer to what people mean by a small business coach, business mentor or growth consultant, with particular depth in brand, websites and search. If your main question is about leading a large team, an executive coach with that specialism will serve you better, and we will tell you so.
How a coaching engagement works
- Strategy session (50 minutes, paid). A professional introductory conversation with the founder about your ambition, your market and whether coaching with us is the right fit.
- Proposal. If coaching makes sense, we propose a fixed period, session rhythm and fee.
- Sessions by video call. Each session has an agenda you set, and ends with clear decisions and actions.
- Between sessions. Short written follow-ups, so decisions do not get lost in the week.
- Review. At the end of the period we look at what changed and whether continuing is worthwhile.
Everything discussed is treated as confidential. We work remotely from the Netherlands, which works well for coaching: sessions are scheduled in the Canadian morning, our afternoon. Founders in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver or anywhere else in Canada work with us the same way.
Marketing strategy as part of coaching
For many founders, the hardest question is where to put the next marketing dollar. We help you build a marketing strategy that fits your stage and your market, not a generic funnel.
- Which customers to focus on, and what they search for and ask before buying.
- Whether SEO, Google Ads, referrals, partnerships or content deserve priority now.
- How to judge the agencies and freelancers you work with, and what to ask them.
- Which numbers to watch, and which to stop worrying about.
We use the same 10-point website score as in our audits as a shared map of your online presence, from technical foundation and speed to trust, conversion, brand and AI visibility. If a coaching conversation shows that something needs doing, you can choose to do it in-house, with another supplier or with us; there is no obligation either way. You can read more on how we work.
How to choose a business coach
- Relevant experience. Ask what the coach has built or run themselves, and how that relates to your challenges.
- Clear focus. A coach who claims to cover everything, from mindset to finance to leadership, is unlikely to be deep in any of it.
- No promised results. Be wary of anyone who guarantees revenue growth. A coach can improve your thinking and follow-through; results depend on you and your market.
- Defined terms. A fixed period, a clear fee and an honest review point beat an open-ended commitment.
- Chemistry and candour. You need someone you trust enough to be open with, and who will tell you what you would rather not hear.
