What Shopify handles, and what it leaves to you
Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform. It takes care of servers, platform security, the core checkout and updates to the system itself. That is a real advantage: you are not responsible for patching software or keeping a server online.
What Shopify does not do is decide how your store should work for your customers. Category structure, product page content, shipping rules, tax settings, theme performance and the number of apps you install are all choices. Those choices decide whether a Shopify store sells well, ranks in search and stays fast. That is where Shopify store design does its work.
Is Shopify the right platform for your store?
For many Canadian product brands, Shopify is the sensible default. It is not the right answer for every store.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | Custom ecommerce build | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Product brands that want reliable, hosted ecommerce | Content-heavy stores needing custom logic in WordPress | Unusual business models the platforms cannot handle |
| Maintenance | Low for the platform; apps need review | Higher: hosting, plugins and updates | Highest: everything is yours to maintain |
| Speed to launch | Fast | Moderate | Slow |
| Flexibility | High within Shopify's framework | Very high | Unlimited, at a cost |
| Main risk | App sprawl and monthly app costs | Plugin conflicts and skipped updates | Cost and dependence on the developer |
Shopify agency, Shopify expert or Shopify developer?
The terms overlap. A Shopify developer usually focuses on theme code and integrations. A Shopify expert or Shopify agency is expected to cover strategy, design, setup and often marketing. Shopify also runs a partner program; partner status says a company works with the platform, but it does not by itself tell you how well a store will sell.
To be clear: Kaptein Beacon is an independent studio. We are not an official Shopify Partner agency and do not claim to be, and we are not affiliated with Shopify. What we offer is strategy, store design, Shopify SEO and development led by one accountable founder. If partner status is a requirement for your business, ask any agency to show it.
Theme, apps and speed
Most slow Shopify stores have the same causes: a heavy theme with features nobody uses, a long list of apps each loading its own scripts, and large unoptimized images.
- Theme. We start from a well-built theme or a custom theme, and remove what the store does not need.
- Apps. Each app has to earn its place. Before launch you receive a list of every app, its purpose and its monthly cost.
- Images and media. Sized and compressed properly, with video only where it helps buyers decide.
- Measurement. Speed checked against Google's Core Web Vitals on mobile, where most shoppers browse.
Shopify SEO, built into the store structure
Shopify gives you control over titles, descriptions, URLs and structured data, with a few fixed patterns such as set URL prefixes for products and collections. We work with those constraints:
- Collections planned around real searches, with useful introductory content.
- Product descriptions written for your customers instead of copied manufacturer text.
- Canonical product URLs and internal links that avoid duplicate paths.
- Filters and variants that do not create thousands of thin pages.
- Product structured data that matches what is on the page.
After launch, ongoing work on rankings is covered by our ecommerce SEO service. Rankings depend on competition and take months; no one can guarantee positions.
Selling in Canada: payments, tax, shipping and French
Payments
Canadian shoppers expect major credit cards and familiar wallets. Shopify Payments is available to Canadian merchants, and Interac is widely used in Canada, especially in person. Which methods are available online depends on your payment setup, so we confirm what your store supports and test each method before launch.
GST/HST, PST and QST
Shopify can apply sales tax by province, but the correct configuration depends on your registrations and products. The Canada Revenue Agency's GST/HST guidance is the starting point. We set up the store based on what you confirm with your accountant; we do not give tax advice.
Shipping
Shipping across provinces and to remote areas is rarely one flat rate. We set up zones and rates that reflect real carrier costs and show delivery information on product pages, not only at checkout.
French for Quebec
If you sell to Quebec, plan French product content, checkout, notifications and URLs from the start. Quebec's language rules can apply to commercial websites; confirm your obligations with a qualified adviser.
Online store and physical location
If you also sell in a shop, studio or at events, Shopify POS can connect in-person sales with your online inventory and customer records. Whether it fits depends on your current till system, hardware and how you manage stock. We look at that during the project rather than assuming it is needed.
Moving your store to Shopify
Migrating from WooCommerce, another platform or an outdated Shopify theme means moving products, customers, order history where needed, and every URL that ranks or has links. We map old URLs to new ones, set redirects, check structured data and monitor indexing after launch. More on our wider approach is on the ecommerce website design page.
What drives the cost of Shopify store design
We do not publish starting prices. Cost depends on the number of products and templates, custom theme work, apps and integrations with inventory or accounting systems, English and French versions, and migration. Our guide to what an ecommerce website costs explains the factors. You receive a fixed scope and fixed price after a paid 50-minute strategy session.
Once the store is live, conversion rate optimization and Google Ads and Shopping campaigns can help it grow. We work remotely from the Netherlands with brands in Toronto and across Canada.
