When WordPress is the right choice
WordPress runs a large share of the web for good reasons: it is open source, widely supported and familiar to many content teams. That makes it a strong platform in specific situations:
- You publish often. Articles, case notes, news, events or resources that your team adds without calling a developer.
- Your team already knows it. Familiarity saves training time and reduces mistakes.
- You need a proven extension. Multilingual content, membership, events or WooCommerce for a store with a lot of editorial content.
- You want independence. Many developers in Canada and elsewhere can work on a well-built WordPress site.
WordPress is not automatically the best choice. It is a choice that should follow from what your site needs to do.
WordPress or something else?
We build on WordPress and on lighter custom setups. This is how we usually weigh the options with a client.
| WordPress (custom theme) | Lightweight custom build | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Content-rich sites with frequent publishing | Service and B2B sites where speed and low maintenance matter most | Product stores that want hosted ecommerce |
| Editing | Familiar editor, flexible | Simple editor or structured content fields | Store admin, adequate for content |
| Maintenance | Regular core, theme and plugin updates | Low: few moving parts | Platform handled by Shopify; apps need review |
| Security | Good when updated and kept lean | Small attack surface | Handled by the platform |
| Main risk | Plugin sprawl and skipped updates | Fewer ready-made extensions | App costs and app-driven slowdowns |
A custom WordPress theme, without page-builder weight
Many WordPress sites are built with a multipurpose theme and a visual page builder. That is quick at the start and expensive later: pages load slowly, layouts break after updates, and every page ends up slightly different because anyone can change anything.
We build a custom theme instead. Your team edits content in clear fields and approved blocks: headline, introduction, service details, frequently asked questions. The design stays consistent, the code stays lean and the editor is harder to break.
Plugins: fewer is better
Each plugin is code someone else maintains. A plugin that is abandoned or poorly written becomes a security and speed risk. Our rule is simple: if the theme can do it cleanly, it does; if a plugin is needed, it must be well-maintained, widely used and worth the extra weight. Before launch you receive a list of every plugin, why it is there and who maintains it.
Speed, SEO and accessibility in WordPress
WordPress can be fast and search-friendly, but only if it is built that way. We plan the page structure from keyword research before design, then make sure the technical side supports it:
- Clean URLs, logical headings and internal links between related pages.
- Structured data where it describes the page accurately.
- Optimized images, caching and minimal scripts, measured against Google's Core Web Vitals.
- Accessibility built to WCAG guidelines, relevant for Ontario organizations covered by the AODA.
A well-built site is a foundation, not a ranking guarantee. Search results depend on competition and content and usually take months. If you want ongoing growth after launch, our SEO services continue from where the build ends.
Bilingual WordPress sites for English and French
For companies selling in Quebec or to French-speaking customers elsewhere in Canada, WordPress handles multilingual content well, provided it is planned properly. Each language gets its own URLs, page titles and keyword research, connected with hreflang so search engines show the right version.
We set up the structure and write the English content. French copy is written by a native French writer, either your own or one we choose together. If Quebec's French-language rules apply to your business, confirm your obligations with a qualified adviser.
Security, updates and WordPress maintenance
Most WordPress problems start with skipped updates. WordPress core, themes and plugins release security fixes regularly, and a site that is left alone for a year becomes an easy target.
After launch you can manage updates yourself with the documentation we provide, or choose our website maintenance service: updates tested before they go live, backups stored off the server, uptime and security monitoring, and small content changes. Either way, you own the site and all accounts.
Improving or rebuilding an existing WordPress site
Not every WordPress site needs to be replaced. Sometimes a technical clean-up, fewer plugins and better templates for key pages solve most problems. Sometimes the foundation is too weak and a rebuild is cheaper in the long run.
We start by reviewing the current site: speed, plugins, theme, search performance and which pages bring in enquiries. If a rebuild is the better route, we map every existing URL and protect what already ranks; our website redesign page explains how. Selling products as well? WooCommerce is covered on our ecommerce website design page.
Choosing a WordPress design agency in Toronto or elsewhere in Canada
Searches for a WordPress designer in Toronto or a WordPress agency in Vancouver return many options. To compare them fairly, ask:
- Do they build custom themes, or customize a multipurpose theme with a page builder?
- How many plugins will the site use, and who maintains them?
- Is keyword research and page planning part of the project?
- Who owns the hosting account, theme code and content?
- What does maintenance after launch include, and is it optional?
Kaptein Beacon is a Netherlands-based studio working remotely with Canadian companies; we do not have a Toronto office and do not claim one. We work with a limited number of companies at a time, led by the founder. For the full picture of our approach, see web design and custom website development.
What drives the cost of a WordPress website
We do not publish starting prices. The main factors are the number of unique page templates, who writes the content, the plugins and integrations needed, English and French versions, and whether an existing site has to be migrated. You receive a fixed scope and fixed price after a paid 50-minute strategy session, which costs CA$375, excluding applicable taxes.
