Executive coach for founders and CEOs whose role is changing faster than they are

An executive coach helps a leader think more clearly about their own role: how they decide, delegate, communicate and spend their time. Kaptein Beacon offers executive coaching for founders and CEOs of Canadian small and mid-sized companies, focused on the shift from running the work yourself to leading a company that grows beyond you.

What executive coaching is

Executive coaching is a structured, confidential conversation over a period of time between a leader and a coach. The focus is the leader: their decisions, habits, relationships and use of time. The coach does not take over the work or tell you what to do. They ask the questions you are not asked inside your company, reflect back what they see, and hold you to the commitments you make.

Leadership coaching in large organizations often centres on managers in a corporate structure. Our executive coaching is for a specific group: founders and CEOs who built a company and now find that what made them successful is no longer enough to lead it.

Who our executive coaching is for

  • Founders whose company has grown past the point where they can be involved in everything.
  • CEOs and managing directors of established small and mid-sized companies who carry the final decisions alone.
  • Owners preparing to step back from daily operations, bring in a managing director or hand over to a next generation.
  • Partners in professional firms who lead the firm while still serving clients.

It is less suitable if you are looking for therapy, life coaching or a programme for developing middle managers across a large organization. In those cases, a coach with that specific specialism will serve you better, and we will say so.

Executive coach, business coach or life coach?

The terms overlap and are often confused. The main difference is the focus: the leader, the business or the person's life as a whole.

Themes we often work on

From doing to leading

Many founders remain the best salesperson, the best specialist and the final check on everything. That works until it becomes the bottleneck. Coaching helps you decide what only you should do, and what you need to let go of.

Delegation and trust

Delegating is not handing over tasks; it is handing over decisions. We work on how you set expectations, give room and follow up without taking work back.

Decisions you keep postponing

A hire, a partner conversation, raising prices, saying no to a large but wrong client. The decisions that matter most are often the ones that wait longest.

Your time and attention

Where your week goes says more about your priorities than your strategy document does. We look at your calendar with you, honestly.

Communication as a leader

How you explain direction to your team, handle difficult conversations, and represent the company to clients, partners and the outside world, including your own personal brand.

Why a founder who runs brands, not a corporate coach

We do not claim a background in corporate leadership programmes, and we do not use psychometric tests or certification titles as selling points. What we bring is direct experience of the decisions founders face: we build and run our own brands too, so we know what it is like to carry the final call on positioning, money, people and priorities.

That makes our executive coaching practical. When a leadership question turns out to be a strategy, marketing or positioning question, which happens often, we can go into that depth as well, through business coaching or our branding work. If your question is primarily about leading a large organization or a complex management team, a specialist executive coach with that background is a better choice.

How an executive coaching engagement works

  1. Strategy session (50 minutes, paid). A professional introductory conversation with the founder of Kaptein Beacon about your ambition, your situation and whether coaching with us is the right fit.
  2. Our decision and proposal. We work with a limited number of leaders at a time. If it is a fit, we propose a fixed period, session rhythm and fee.
  3. Sessions by video call. You bring the agenda; each session ends with clear decisions and commitments.
  4. Between sessions. A short written follow-up, so commitments do not disappear into the week.
  5. Review. At the end of the period we look at what changed and whether continuing is worthwhile.

We work remotely from the Netherlands. Sessions are scheduled in the Canadian morning, our afternoon, which suits leaders anywhere from Halifax to Vancouver. More on how we work.

Confidentiality

Executive coaching only works if you can speak openly. What you discuss stays between us. We do not report to your board, partners or staff unless you explicitly ask us to, and we handle personal information in line with Canadian privacy expectations under PIPEDA. If a company pays for your coaching, we agree upfront, in writing, what is and is not shared.

How to choose an executive coach

  • Relevant experience. Ask what the coach has led or built, and how that relates to your situation.
  • Clear focus. A coach who covers everything from mindset to finance to leadership is unlikely to be deep in any of it.
  • No promised outcomes. Be wary of guarantees about revenue, promotions or transformation. Coaching improves how you think and act; results depend on you and your context.
  • Defined terms. A fixed period, a clear fee and an honest review point.
  • Candour. You need someone who tells you what others in your company will not.

Frequently asked questions

What does an executive coach do?

An executive coach helps a leader reflect on and improve how they lead: their decisions, delegation, communication, priorities and use of time. Through regular confidential sessions, the coach asks hard questions, gives direct feedback and holds the leader to their commitments. The leader stays responsible for every decision.

What is the difference between a business coach and an executive coach?

A business coach focuses mainly on the business: strategy, market position, marketing, pricing and growth. An executive coach focuses on you as a leader: your role, behaviour and decisions. For founders the two often overlap, which is why we offer both and agree the focus with you before starting.

What is the difference between a life coach and an executive coach?

A life coach works on personal goals, wellbeing and life choices in general. An executive coach works on your professional role as a leader within a specific organization. Personal topics can come up in executive coaching, but the focus stays on leadership. We do not offer life coaching.

Who benefits most from executive coaching?

Founders and CEOs whose company has outgrown the way they lead it, owners preparing a handover or a step back, and leaders facing decisions they keep postponing. It works best for people who want direct feedback, are willing to change their own habits and can commit to regular sessions over a defined period.

How much does executive coaching cost?

The fee depends on the length of the engagement and the session rhythm. We do not publish standard packages. The starting point is a 50-minute strategy session for CA$375, excluding applicable taxes. If coaching makes sense afterwards, you receive a proposal with a fixed period and fixed fee.

How long does an executive coaching engagement last?

Most engagements run for a defined period of several months, with sessions every few weeks. That gives enough time to work on real situations as they happen and see whether new habits hold. At the end we review together whether continuing is useful; there is no open-ended commitment.

Can my company pay for my coaching?

Yes. Many leaders have their company pay for coaching. In that case we agree upfront, in writing, what is shared with the company, if anything. By default, the content of sessions stays confidential between you and us. Whether coaching costs are deductible is a question for your accountant.
