When WordPress is the right choice
WordPress powers a large share of the web, which brings real advantages: a familiar editor, a huge pool of developers and an extension for almost any need. Those same strengths are why so many WordPress sites end up slow, fragile and hard to update. The platform is rarely the problem. The way it is assembled usually is.
We recommend WordPress when at least one of these is true:
- Your team publishes regularly: news, projects, case studies, articles or job listings.
- Staff already know the WordPress editor and you want to keep that familiarity.
- You need a specific, well-maintained plugin, such as a membership or learning system.
- You want the freedom to switch developers easily later.
If none of those apply and speed and low maintenance matter most, a custom website build may serve you better. We will tell you which we would choose and why.
WordPress, custom, Shopify or a website builder?
Here is how the common options compare for an Australian service business or small retailer.
| WordPress (custom theme) | Custom build | Shopify | Website builder (Wix, Squarespace) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strongest at | Content-heavy sites edited in-house | Speed, security and unusual structures | Selling products online | Quick, simple sites you build yourself |
| Editing | Familiar editor with custom fields | Purpose-built fields | Good for products, limited for content | Drag and drop |
| Maintenance | Core, theme and plugin updates | Light | Handled largely by Shopify | Handled by the platform |
| Flexibility | Very high | Very high | High within the commerce model | Limited to the platform |
| Ownership and portability | Full; move hosts freely | Full | Store data exportable; theme tied to Shopify | Tied to the platform |
| Main risk | Plugin bloat and neglected updates | Higher upfront cost | App costs add up | Hard to grow beyond the template |
Why we do not start from a plumber or dentist theme
Search for an electrician WordPress theme, a plumber theme or a dentist WordPress theme and you will find hundreds, each with a polished demo. They are tempting: the demo looks finished, and the price is low. The catch shows up later.
- They load everything. Sliders, animations, ten layout options and bundled plugins, most of which your site never uses but every visitor downloads.
- They look like your competitors. Popular trade and dental themes appear on many sites, which undercuts the effort to look distinct.
- The demo is not your business. The page structure reflects a generic plumber in a generic city, not your services, licence details and service area.
- Updates can break things. Theme and bundled plugin updates do not always play well together.
We build a custom theme instead: only the templates you need, editing fields that match your content, and nothing loaded that is not used. It takes more work upfront and is far easier to live with.
WordPress websites for tradies
WordPress websites for tradies have to work on a phone, on a job site, with a weak signal. The basics matter more than the polish: tap-to-call on every page, service areas that are clear, licence and insurance details where customers expect them, photos of real work and a short quote form. In several states, licensed trades are expected to show their licence number in advertising, so it belongs in the site's footer or contact details.
A lean WordPress site also lets you add project pages and suburb-relevant work as jobs are completed, which supports local search over time. Our page on SEO for tradies explains how that fits with Google Business Profile and reviews.
Speed, image SEO and accessibility in WordPress
Most slow WordPress sites are slow for the same reasons: oversized images, a page builder, and plugins that load scripts on every page. We fix those at the source.
- Images. WordPress image SEO is mostly discipline: correctly sized files in modern formats, descriptive file names and meaningful alt text written for people, not keyword lists.
- Scripts. Only load what a page needs, and avoid plugins that add weight for small features.
- Caching and hosting. Good hosting with Australian points of presence and sensible caching.
- Structure. Clean headings, internal links and structured data built into the theme.
- Accessibility. Colour contrast, keyboard navigation, labelled forms and alt text, tested against WCAG.
Google's own guidance on Core Web Vitals describes how loading, responsiveness and visual stability are measured; we use those metrics as targets during the build.
Security, updates and hosting
WordPress is not insecure by nature. Neglected WordPress is. Most compromised sites run outdated plugins, abandoned themes or weak admin logins. We keep the plugin list short, choose actively maintained extensions, enforce strong authentication and set up off-site backups.
After launch, someone has to apply updates, test that nothing broke and watch for issues. You can do that in-house, or use our website maintenance service. Either way, it should be a deliberate arrangement rather than an assumption.
Selling online: WooCommerce or an alternative?
WooCommerce turns WordPress into a store and works well for modest catalogues, content-led brands and businesses that want everything on one platform. It does add maintenance and hosting demands as the store grows. People looking for a WooCommerce alternative usually want less upkeep, and Shopify is the most common answer. We compare the two honestly on our ecommerce website design page, including GST settings, Australia Post and Sendle integrations and buy now, pay later options.
Taking over an existing WordPress site, and what drives the cost
If you already run WordPress, a rebuild is not always necessary. We start by reviewing the theme, plugins, hosting, speed, security and content. Sometimes a clean-up and a faster theme are enough; sometimes the site is so tangled that rebuilding is cheaper than repairing. If a rebuild is the answer, our website redesign method protects your existing rankings with a full redirect plan.
The cost of a WordPress project depends on the number of templates, copywriting, functionality such as bookings or memberships, content migration and accessibility testing. We do not publish prices or ranges. Projects begin with a strategy session with the founder (A$425 excl. GST); if we take the project on, you receive a fixed-scope, fixed-price proposal.
