What an SEO consultant does
An SEO consultant is paid mainly to think, not to produce. Where an agency writes pages, fixes code and builds links, a consultant decides which of those things are worth doing, in what order, and checks that they are done well. The output is clarity: a prioritised plan, a reviewed specification, a clear answer to a difficult question.
Typical questions we are asked to answer:
- We are rebuilding the website. What must we protect so we do not lose our search traffic?
- Our agency reports growth, but enquiries are flat. Is the work actually right?
- Our marketer is capable but new to SEO. What should they focus on this quarter?
- We want to enter Germany and the Netherlands. How should the site be structured?
- Should we invest in content, links or technical fixes first?
SEO consultant, freelance specialist or SEO agency
The three are often confused. The right choice depends on who will actually carry out the work.
| SEO consultant | Freelance SEO specialist | SEO agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main role | Strategy, priorities, review | Hands-on execution of defined tasks | Execution across several disciplines |
| Best when | You have people who can execute | You have a clear task and need capacity | You want the work done for you |
| What you pay for | Experience and judgement | Time and specialist skill | A team and ongoing delivery |
| Typical risk | Advice that nobody implements | Narrow focus, single point of failure | Senior sale, junior delivery |
| Your involvement | High: you own the execution | Medium: you brief and review | Lower: you approve and steer |
When SEO advice pays off most
Consultancy is best value at moments where a wrong decision is expensive and hard to reverse:
- Before and during a website migration or redesign. URL changes, platform switches and content cuts are the most common cause of sudden, lasting traffic loss.
- When you build an in-house function. A consultant can set direction, define reporting and coach a new marketer through the first months.
- When an agency relationship is in doubt. An independent review of what has been delivered, against what was promised, gives you facts for the next conversation.
- Before a board-level decision. Entering a new market, rebranding or merging websites all have search consequences that should be priced in.
How we provide SEO consultancy
A focused review
A defined question, a thorough investigation and a clear answer with recommendations. Often this starts with an SEO audit as the evidence base.
Ongoing advisory
Regular sessions with your team: reviewing plans and work, setting priorities, answering questions as they arise. Useful for in-house teams that want a senior sparring partner rather than a supplier.
Migration and launch oversight
Redirect maps, pre-launch checks, launch-day monitoring and post-launch follow-up, working alongside your developer or web agency.
Agency oversight
We review your agency's plans and output on your behalf and help you ask the right questions. We do not use this to pitch for the work; if that ever became relevant, we would say so openly.
Each form is agreed with a fixed scope. How we run engagements is described on how we work.
How to judge an SEO expert
People search for the best SEO expert in the UK as if there were an official ranking. There is not, and lists that claim otherwise are usually advertising. Better tests:
- They explain their reasoning and are comfortable being checked against Google's own documentation.
- They talk about your business first: margins, capacity, best clients, sales cycle. Keywords come later.
- They say no to work that will not pay off, including work they could bill for.
- They give ranges, not promises on timelines, and never guarantee positions.
- They distinguish evidence from opinion. SEO has plenty of folklore. A good strategist knows which practices are documented, which are well tested and which are guesses.
Certifications and credentials
There is no official licence or regulated qualification for SEO in the UK, and Google does not certify SEO consultants. Google's certifications relate to products such as Google Ads and Analytics. Course certificates can show that someone has studied the subject, but they say little about judgement.
What does count is evidence you can verify: the quality of their reasoning in a first conversation, the clarity of their written work, and whether their own websites practise what they preach. We build and run our own brands and websites and test methods there before recommending them to clients.
SEO advice for solicitors, dentists and other regulated professions
Firms in regulated professions often need advice more than volume. A solicitors' practice needs practice-area pages that are precise, current and consistent with SRA rules on publicity. A dental practice needs treatment content that informs patients without overstating outcomes, in line with GDC guidance. Getting the structure and claims right matters more than publishing frequently.
We advise on search strategy and flag wording that may need checking; final responsibility for regulatory compliance stays with the firm. See law firm SEO and dental SEO for the sector detail. If you would rather have the work carried out end to end, our SEO agency service covers that.
What you need in-house, and what drives cost
Consultancy works when someone on your side can act on it: a marketer with time allocated, a developer who can implement technical changes, or an agency that accepts review. Without that, advice stays on paper, and an agency model is the better choice.
Cost depends on the type of engagement, the size and complexity of the site, the number of markets and how much time your team needs from us. We do not publish hourly or day rates. We start with a paid strategy session at £225 excluding VAT; if we take the work on, you receive a fixed price for a fixed scope.
